What Is Dragon in 2026?
Dragon is Nuance’s speech recognition family, owned by Microsoft since 2022. The product most people still mean by “Dragon NaturallySpeaking” is now Dragon Professional v16 for Windows, released in 2023. It dictates into Windows apps, recognizes speech on the PC, and adds the feature Dragon is famous for: full command-and-control, with voice menus, a mouse grid, custom commands, macros, and scripting. Dragon Legal v16 adds legal vocabulary and citation formatting.
The medical line has moved to the cloud. Dragon Medical One runs on Microsoft Azure, and in 2025 Microsoft folded it into Dragon Copilot, which combines dictation with ambient clinical documentation for health systems.
Nuance no longer lists prices on its site. Authorized resellers sell Dragon Professional v16 for about $699, Dragon Legal is quote-based, and the medical products are per-user subscriptions. What Dragon Still Does Better
Before switching, be clear about what you would give up. Most modern dictation apps, including Voibe, replace Dragon’s writing workflow, not all of Dragon.

Why People Are Looking for a Dragon Alternative
Some of these problems show up on day one. Others only show up the day something goes wrong. We have investigated each topic in depth, and one of our customers, a workers’ compensation attorney with 37 years in practice, ran into several of them at once. This is the short version.
1. Your accuracy lives in a voice profile on one computer
Dragon learns your voice in a per-user profile stored on the PC, under C:\ProgramData\Nuance\NaturallySpeaking…\Users\. By default, Dragon also keeps that profile’s backups on the same computer, so a
single dead drive can take both. Unless you exported the profile to other storage,
years of corrections and custom words go with it.
That is exactly what happened to our attorney customer. His hard drive failed, and his case files, email, calendar, and billing were back within a day because they lived in the cloud. “The only thing I couldn’t get back was Dragon,” he said. “I thought, oh my God, this is going to take me months and months to retrain the thing.” He never retrained it. He replaced Dragon with Voibe instead.
2. There is no Dragon for Mac
Nuance discontinued Dragon for Mac in October 2018. Dragon Professional v16 is Windows-only, and Microsoft documents Dragon Medical One as a native Windows app that Mac users can only reach through Citrix or a Windows virtual machine. 3. Training and correcting take weeks, not minutes
Older Dragon versions asked for 20 to 30 minutes of reading aloud before first use. Dragon v16 markets strong accuracy from the first session, but its profile still improves mainly as you correct it, and long-time users describe weeks of corrections before it settles. Our attorney customer had sat through Dragon’s training routine more than once. Long-time Dragon users typically dictate punctuation by name throughout a document: “comma,” “period,” “new paragraph.” On a one-page email that is a minor habit. On an eight-page client letter, it is the difference between dictating and reciting, and it is the habit our attorney customer was most relieved to drop.
5. The product line keeps shrinking
Nuance ended sales of its v15 editions, including Dragon Home and Dragon Legal 15, on February 27, 2023, and there has been no major desktop release since v16. Dragon Anywhere, the mobile app, stopped new sales and renewals on July 1, 2026, according to notices on its App Store and Google Play listings. Authorized resellers have also announced an end of sale for Dragon Professional Anywhere and Dragon Legal Anywhere at the end of 2026, although Microsoft has not published its own notice. 7. Windows updates can break a working setup
Dragon hooks deeply into Windows and Office, which makes it sensitive to updates. In 2026, users on Microsoft’s Q&A forums reported Dragon 16 commands misfiring after a January Windows 11 update and Dragon failing to load after another update. These are user reports rather than confirmed defects, and many installations run without issues, but they matter when dictation is how you do your job.
