Dragon Professional Anywhere Is Ending. Here's What to Do Before You Renew.

If you dictate through Dragon Professional Anywhere, whether into a law firm's Citrix desktop or an office PC, the renewal you sign this year may be the last one Nuance sells you. You don't need to panic about that. You need to use the time well.

Dragon Professional Anywhere stops selling on December 31, 2026 and reaches end of life on December 31, 2027. Before your 2026 renewal, do five things:

1. Find your renewal date and get the end date of your next term in writing.
2. Export your custom words, Auto-Texts, and commands while the service still runs.
3. Sort your users into people who dictate prose and people who drive Windows by voice.
4. Pilot a replacement for a week on real work.
5. Renew only the seats that still need Dragon, or none.

The same dates and the same plan apply to Dragon Legal Anywhere. I've called it the Last-Renewal Rule: choose your way out before you pay for a final year, not during it. Each step is below, with prices for every option.

A note on the dates: they come from authorized Nuance partners, Thax Software (September 3, 2026) and Byte Heroes (July 15, 2026). When I checked on September 24, 2026, Nuance and Microsoft hadn't published an advisory, and Nuance's own Professional Anywhere and Legal Anywhere pages still sold both products. The plan works either way, because it doesn't ask you to leave early. It asks you to be ready.

Your own renewal date matters more than either announced date, because it decides when your service actually runs out. Find it on your reseller invoice or in the Nuance Management Center, then line it up against what the Thax Software notice says happens:

• Through December 31, 2026: existing contracts can be renewed one final time. That covers every contract type Thax lists: Nuance-hosted cloud subscriptions on Azure, third-party hosted setups (Thax names Telekom), and on-premise installs with a maintenance contract.
• From January 1, 2027: no new subscriptions and no new seats. A firm that hires in 2027 can't add users.
• During 2027: contracts expire as their terms end. A one-year renewal signed in October 2026 runs to October 2027, not to December 31, 2027.
• December 31, 2027: end of life. No security patches, bug fixes, Nuance or Microsoft support, or compatibility guarantees with new Windows versions. Thax says no extension is planned.

Then ask your reseller or Nuance account rep two questions in writing: when does the term I'm about to buy end, and will Professional Anywhere be renewable after it? Neither partner notice says whether the hosted recognition stops on December 31, 2027 or later, so don't plan on dictating into 2028.

If you already renewed earlier in 2026, you may not get another renewal at all. Your current term end is your deadline.

Export your Dragon customizations while Dragon Professional Anywhere still works. The recognition engine is easy to replace. The years of custom words, Auto-Texts, and voice commands aren't, and in a hosted product they live on Nuance's side.

• On a managed deployment, ask whoever runs the Nuance Management Center for an export of each user's custom words and Auto-Texts. Nuance's product page describes NMC as the place where customizations are managed and shared across users.
• On a single seat, check the DragonBar's vocabulary tools for an export option and save the list as plain text.
• Open the file before you move on. Make sure your terms are in it, and delete misrecognitions you accepted years ago and never cleaned up.

Most firms leaving Dragon Professional Anywhere need two destinations, not one. The people who mostly dictate letters, emails, and notes want a different tool from the people who run Windows by voice. Here are the four real options, with prices checked in September 2026.

Voice-command users: move to Dragon Professional v16 or Dragon Legal v16

This is where Nuance's partners point Anywhere customers. Your team's command habits carry over and the engine is familiar. You're buying software released in 2023, and Nuance's Windows 10 advisory says Windows 10 problems caused by the operating system get support only after an upgrade to Windows 11 and v16. Prose dictators: move to a modern dictation app

If someone mostly used Dragon to dictate letters, emails, memos, and notes, a modern app does that job for a fraction of the price. Voibe for Windows is a native app, and one plan covers a Mac too. Occasional users: try what's already in Windows

Windows Voice Access and Win+H are free on Windows 11 and good enough for light dictation. They won't hold years of firm-specific terms. Our Dragon alternatives for Windows ranks them with four other options and says who should keep Dragon.

Replacing Dragon Professional Anywhere costs between $0 and about $4,089 per user over three years. Nuance doesn't publish an Anywhere price, but two US resellers, DictationOne and Voice Automated, list Professional Anywhere at $55 a month on a one-year term, or $660 a year. Your negotiated rate may be lower.

The Anywhere row can't actually happen, since the service ends in 2027. It shows what your budget already carries: one year of Professional Anywhere at $660 costs nearly as much as a Dragon Professional v16 license ($699.99) and more than four Voibe lifetime licenses ($596). For teams of three or more, Voibe Teams is $49 per seat per year, $611 less per seat than $660.

Then pilot. Give each group its replacement for a week of real work, running next to Anywhere, at least two weeks before your renewal date. Your final Dragon Professional Anywhere renewal doesn't have to cover everyone. Once the pilot has shown who moves where:

• Prose dictators who were happy in the pilot: don't renew their seats. Move them now, while Anywhere still works as a fallback.
• Voice-command users: either take the last renewal for their seats and move them to v16 during 2027, or move them to v16 now and skip it.
• Everyone: keep the exported word lists and Auto-Texts somewhere safe, whatever you choose.

At the $660 reseller price, every seat you don't renew is $660 you don't spend on a service with one year left.

Dragon Legal Anywhere users should follow the same five steps, with one extra decision: whether you still need Dragon's legal formatting. Legal Anywhere's value was its legal vocabulary and automatic formatting of citations, hosted so one profile followed an attorney from the office to a home PC to a Citrix session. Its partner-announced dates are the same: end of sale December 31, 2026, end of life December 31, 2027.

• If you rely on citation formatting and legal command macros, move to Dragon Legal v16 on each Windows PC. You keep the legal vocabulary and lose the hosting.
• If you mostly dictate letters, emails, and memos, a modern app with a custom dictionary is enough. Load case names, party names, and statute shorthand once. One attorney who dictated for four decades made that switch, in a lawyer's account of leaving Dragon.
• If confidentiality drives the decision, choose by where the audio goes. Voibe on an Apple Silicon Mac never sends audio off the machine. Dragon Professional Anywhere is Nuance's cloud-hosted speech recognition service for business users on Windows. The software runs on Windows workstations and thin clients, and in virtual desktops: Nuance's product page lists Citrix, VMware Horizon, and Microsoft Remote Desktop Services. Recognition runs on Microsoft Azure, which Nuance describes as HITRUST CSF certified. Administrators manage licenses and shared customizations in the Nuance Management Center. The Dragon Legal Anywhere 2024.2 release notes list Windows 10, Windows 11, and Windows Server 2016 through 2022 as supported. Dragon Legal Anywhere is the same service with a legal vocabulary and automatic citation formatting.

Neither is Dragon Anywhere, Nuance's iOS and Android app, which stopped selling on July 1, 2026. Nuance sold the phone app as the mobile companion to the desktop Anywhere editions, and their product pages still advertise it as included, but it can't be bought or renewed anymore. Resellers and admins shorten the two desktop editions to DPA and DLA, which is also how Nuance names their download sites. If your renewal quote says "Anywhere" and you dictate on a PC, the dates above apply to you.

The Dragon Professional Anywhere end-of-life dates come from Nuance partners, not from a Nuance or Microsoft notice. Here's what I found on September 24, 2026:

Two partners agree, and one is an authorized Nuance partner quoting contract terms in detail. That's enough to plan around. The five steps above hold whether or not Nuance confirms the dates, and every one of them is worth doing before a renewal anyway.

Nuance offers no hosted successor to Dragon Professional Anywhere for lawyers, businesses, or other professional users. Its cloud dictation for clinicians carries on as Dragon Medical One, now part of Microsoft's Dragon Copilot clinical-documentation platform. Nothing like it exists for other fields.

That matches what Microsoft has done with Dragon since buying Nuance in March 2022. Dragon Home ended in 2023. Dragon Professional v16 shipped in 2023 with no major release since. The Dragon Anywhere phone app stopped selling in July 2026. Dragon for Mac had already ended in 2018. The investment has gone into healthcare, and Nuance's website now routes some Dragon pages to Microsoft's health-solutions site. For everyone outside healthcare, Nuance's own answer is the desktop: Dragon Professional 16 and Dragon Legal 16, perpetual Windows licenses installed on each PC. That's why Step 3 splits your users. The desktop keeps the commands. It doesn't keep the hosting.
