Wisprtype is a free, native macOS dictation app from Indian indie developer Piyush Garg. It runs OpenAI Whisper models locally on Apple Silicon's Neural Engine through the WhisperKit framework. Smart Typing — the post-transcription cleanup that removes "um," "uh," and adds punctuation — runs locally by default through a Llama 3.2 3B model on Apple's MLX framework.

Three product facts that anchor everything else:

Wispr Flow's architecture and posture differ structurally from Wisprtype:

• Cloud-first by default. Audio routes through Wispr's transcription pipeline at Baseten, then through OpenAI, Anthropic, Cerebras, or Fireworks AI for text processing depending on the feature. There is no offline mode.
• Privacy Mode is opt-in for individuals. When Privacy Mode is on, dictation data is not stored or used for model training. Wisprtype's audio path (default):

1. You hold Right ⌘. Microphone captures audio into memory.
2. WhisperKit on Apple Silicon's Neural Engine transcribes audio in-process.
3. Local Llama 3.2 3B (via MLX) runs Smart Typing cleanup in-process.
4. Cleaned text is pasted into the active app via Apple Events.
5. Audio buffer is discarded. Nothing is written to disk. Nothing is transmitted.

If you opt into a cloud transcription provider, step 2 changes: audio is uploaded to OpenAI, Groq, or Deepgram for transcription. Cloud Smart Typing changes step 3: transcript text is sent to the configured provider's LLM API. These are deliberate user opt-ins, not defaults.

Wispr Flow's audio path (default for individual users):

1. You press the Wispr Flow hotkey. Microphone captures audio.
