As of July 2026, VoiceInk's pricing page lists Solo at $29 (1 Mac), Personal at $49 (2 Macs), and Extended at $69 (3 Macs) — one-time payments with lifetime updates and a 14-day money-back guarantee. Willow Voice is the opposite wager: that dictation should be a fast-moving cloud service, not a local utility. Launched in March 2025 and backed by Y Combinator's X25 batch with $4.2M from BoxGroup and angels including Dharmesh Shah and Alexis Ohanian, it has shipped at startup speed: a Windows app in January 2026, Cursor support in February, Teams in March — plus an iPhone keyboard that earned TechCrunch coverage in November 2025.

The feature set leans on the cloud deliberately. Style memory learns how you write per app — casual in Slack, formal in Gmail — and AI Mode rewrites rambling speech into finished text. The Mac App Store listing sits at 4.1/5 from 24 ratings (a combined Mac/iOS listing — the iOS companion drags it), while the GitHub repository's 4,300+ stars and 33 contributors are the more meaningful signal for an open-source tool. Independent reviewer Kuan-Hao Huang reported significant productivity gains after switching. The recurring criticisms: the iOS app's bugs and the DIY feel of advanced features.

Willow Voice: early-stage enthusiasm with early-stage sample sizes. Product Hunt shows 4.9/5 from 8 reviews since its March 13, 2025 launch; the stronger third-party signals are institutional — YC X25 backing, a $4.2M seed round, and TechCrunch's November 2025 coverage of the iOS keyboard citing 50% month-over-month growth. Praise clusters on output quality; hesitation clusters on the cloud dependency and subscription.

Read together: VoiceInk's crowd is small and technical, and trusts the code. Willow's crowd is small and early, and trusts the trajectory. Neither has the thousand-rating record of a Superwhisper — both are bets on a direction rather than a decade of receipts.

For a single-Mac user who dictates anything sensitive, VoiceInk is the better buy and it isn't close: $29 once, processing that never leaves the machine, and source code you can audit. Its rough edges — the DIY AI setup, the screenshot-OCR context trick, the Mac-only ceiling — are real, but none of them undermine the core job of accurate, private, offline dictation.

If your day spans Windows at the office, a Mac at home, and an iPhone in between — or if AI Mode's rewrite-my-rambling output is the feature you'd actually use daily — VoiceInk simply doesn't compete there, and Willow's free Frontier Mini tier lets you find out for $0. Just go in clear-eyed: the flagship model is cloud-only, the zero-retention guarantee lives on the Business tier, and three years of Pro costs $432.
